To gain insight into water filtration, I visited the local Millwood Water Filtration Plant in Millwood, NY, as part of my 5th-grade Capstone Project. John Young, plant manager with GE Suez, was kind enough to give me a 75-minute site tour and explain how the water from the Catskill Reservoir is treated before supplying to homes. The Millwood Water Treatment Plant has a design capacity to supply approximately 55 million gallons of water a day to Westchester County, NY. The water goes through 5 main treatment steps: Coagulation, Flocculation, Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF), Ozonation, and Filtration. See this video to get a feel for how much sludge is removed from water during water treatment.
Water Testing:
Raw Turbidity = 1.28 NTU; Filtered Water Turbidity = 0.02 NTU
Adjust PH = 7.5; Add Chlorine for continuous disinfection
